Coaches Corner

Coaches Corner – February 2017

Allen

Brie has been coaching at ASI Allen for five years! Before this, she was a cheerleader for seven years. She coaches everything from Kidz Gym, Girls Gymnastics, Power Tumbling, and Fun Products! She is also coaching Girls Team Level 1 for the first time this year.

She currently attends UT Dallas and will be graduating in December 2018 with a degree in Education. She says gymnastics is great for kids because “it teaches kids body awareness, balance, and strength that be used in all aspects of life.” She started out at ASI taking tumbling classes when she was eight years old. She now loves coaching here “because everyday is different and you never know what to expect while working with kids. They are so energetic and fun that you never get bored.” She describes her coaching style as spirited, fun, and positive. Three words she would use to sum up coaching at ASI: entertaining, exciting, and friendly!

Arlington

Landon has been coaching at ASI Arlington for three months. He coaches mostly Kidz Gym classes and Fun Products. Landon has the type of personality that you can’t help but warm up to. He always has a fun, cheerful attitude whenever he comes to work, and his coaching style is energetic, creative, and adaptable. One of the things Landon loves most about coaching at ASI is the relationships he has built with the other coaches and the students. Other than working at ASI, Landon also works as a counselor at Camp Thurman, plays hockey in an adult hockey league, volunteers for a group called Young Life, and is going to school at UT Arlington to be a teacher. Needless to say, we, here in Arlington, are happy to have Landon as a part of our team!

Cypress

Heather has been coaching at ASI Cypress for two years. She currently coaches Tiny Tots, Kidz Gym, Girls and Boys Gymnastics, Power Tumbling, and some Fun Products. Coach Heather grew up doing gymnastics and cheer. When she is not at ASI coaching, she enjoys to read and work out. We asked her why she thought gymnastics was great for kids and she said, “They learn discipline, how to follow directions, how to be a teammate, confidence, self esteem, how to challenge themselves, and how to conquer fears.” Coach Heather found out about ASI from driving by the gym everyday. We also asked her why ASI, and she stated, “I love ASI because of the positive atmosphere. And that I never have to call for my classes my kiddos just come running. No matter what, that always puts a smile on my face.” ASI Cypress is so lucky to have Coach Heather!

Firewheel

Jaymes has been with ASI Firewheel for the past eight months. He first heard about ASI through a mutual friend, Coach Jason, and now enjoys working alongside him. He said he loves working for ASI because “I love my coworkers and the children and the fact that I get to learn something new everyday.” Currently, you can find him coaching Kidz Gym Level 1, Camp, Open Gym, and for our Gymnastics AfterSschool program. He describes his coaching style as fun, engaging, and lighthearted. When we asked him why gymnastics is great for kids he explained, “It’s a sport that teaches balance, agility, and body awareness, which is good for any athletic pursuits they have later in life.” His favorite event to coach is floor.

Outside of ASI, Jaymes attends Eastfield College and is studying to become a computer programmer. He aspires to continue his education and obtain a degree in Aerospace engineering. Growing up, he was a very active child. He participated in football, basketball, and even cheered for his high school team. Today, he stays active by working out at home and by getting out of the house on the weekends. Prior to ASI, his work experience with kids was through years of babysitting. Now he enjoys working with children while getting the opportunity to impart so much more than just gymnastics. He said working for ASI is great, fun, educational, and amazing!

We are excited to have Jaymes as part of our team, and can’t wait to see the full impact he will surely have on our students!

Keller

Jordan has been part of the ASI Keller family for four-and-a-half years! He got his start here by his sister, who also worked with ASI, motivating him to apply. He coaches several Girl’s and Boy’s Gymnastics classes, as well as, Power Tumbling. He is best known around here for coaching our Boy’s Team. One of his great motivating tools is his Pokemon card collection that he distributes among the boys when they have worked diligently at practice.

Jordan has five years of club gymnastics and six years of junior and high school gymnastics under his belt. He also has ten years of recreational and club soccer experience. He says coaching has been great at helping him stay fit; well, that and practicing his stealthy ninja skills to sneak up on his co-workers.

His favorite event to coach is parallel bars and he would describe his coaching style as “fun, technical, and encouraging.” Jordan believes that gymnastics helps to “develop confidence and coordination, create friendships, and teach life skills.”

When asked what he loves most about ASI he says, “ASI has helped me develop a fun style of coaching, not to mention, it allows me to do what I love!” This year he has taken the Boy’s Team back to USAG competitions. We can’t wait to see how far they go and what Coach Jordan does with the Boy’s Team as it continues to grow each month.

Mesquite

Francesca in Mesquite is one of our Girls Gymnastics coaches, and has been with ASI for five months now! Although she has only been coaching at ASI for a short time, she has grown tremendously as a coach and employee. Francesca has a strong background in gymnastics, as she did it for 12 years, even attending our ASI location Firewheel! Her childhood revolved around the sport of gymnastics, and now she has the opportunity to coach! Francesca’s favorite event is bars, and would sum up her coaching style as focused, technical, and encouraging!

Francesca says gymnastics is great for kids because, “Gymnastics teaches kids how to be disciplined and focused to achieve their goals. It also teaches them basic skills like balance and awareness of their body so that they can succeed in other sports too.” When it comes to coaching at ASI she “loves connecting with kids and being a positive influence in their life. I also love how everyone who works at ASI is like a family.”

Francesca has definitely became a big part of the family in Mesquite while working with us. She is constantly focusing on her kids and how to help them progress. She is always willing to help out the gym, and always has a positive attitude!

Plano West

Meredith has been working at ASI Plano West for two and a half years. She has become one of the leaders in our gym, and is loved by the families and the staff. She is always willing to help other coaches with drills, advice on how to coach a child, or even answering phones to help the sales team. She coaches in almost all of our programs, from Tiny Tots to Girls Team Levels 1-4. Meredith’s calm, fun, and supportive way of coaching is seen in every class. She always shows up and leaves work with a smile. Meredith is the type of coach everyone wants. She is technical, and also fun. Meredith coaches gymnastics at ASI Plano West because “I love spending my day helping kids achieve their goals. I have fun every day.”

Meredith attended Hebron High School and earned her Bachelor’s’ in Elementary Education from Iowa State. When she isn’t lighting up the gym with her energy, she is traveling all over the US or traveling the world with her two best friends. If she isn’t on a trip, then she is probably sitting at home with her pet bunny, Pancake, reading a book.

ASI Plano West is so lucky to have Meredith on our team!

Rockwall

Erika has been coaching at ASI Rockwall for a little over ten months now, and we are so excited that she is part of our team. She is a student at Rockwall High School, and plans to attend University of Kentucky after she graduates. Erika started gymnastics five years ago at Utley Middle School, and she then worked hard to make Varsity her freshman year of high school. She now trains Level 8 optional skills at her school, and she is looking forward to competing at the state championship in April.

She currently coaches our Girls Recreational classes, both Bronze level and Gold Level. She is also a big asset to our Fun Products program here at ASI. She works some Open Gym, Parents’ Night Outs, and a few camps.

We asked Erika what she thought made gymnastics so great for kids. She said, “It helps the kids build muscle and be active while learning cool flips that everyone wants to know how to do. It also teaches great discipline and problem solving skills. You learn to face your fears in this sport.” Coach Erika says she learned about ASI from her friend Adam, who is our Boys Team coach here at ASI.

“I love getting to see the kids faces when they do a new skill that they have been working so hard to do for months,” she states. She says her favorite event to coach would be beam. When we asked her to sum up coaching at ASI in five words, she said, “A fun new adventure everyday.”

We are very lucky to have such an athlete and an amazing “team player,” not only as a coach at ASI, but as part of the ASI family.

The Woodlands

Michella has been with ASI The Woodlands for three years. She coaches Girls Team, Kidz Gym, Tiny Tots, and Girls Gymnastics. Michella describes her coaching style as loving, consistent, and patient. We asked her why she loves coaching at ASI and she said, “I love getting to teach kids gymnastics, life lessons, and team work.”

When Coach Michella is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, singing at church, and playing in her volleyball league. The Woodlands is lucky to have Coach Michella with us!

Student Spotlight

Student Spotlight – February 2017

Allen

ASI Allen would like to introduce Eliana! Eliana is currently in Girls Bronze with Coach Brie. She says that Coach Brie is awesome “because she lets us do the trampoline and bars!” Eliana also loves coming to gymnastics “because it has lots of fun things!”

“Being in gymnastics has given Eliana a fun way to improve her concentration and follow directions. She loves learning new skills and we can see a big difference in her balance and strength. We are just glad she gets to have so much fun during her class,” Eliana’s parents said about her coming to gymnastics. They started bringing her to ASI because it was close to their house and now they love it because of the coaches!

“You can tell all the coaches love all the kids and want to help them grow in their skills…we wouldn’t be anywhere else.”

We are so happy that Eliana and her family love coming to ASI every week, and we can’t wait to see her improve in her gymnastics!

Arlington

Isabella has been a student at ASI Arlington for about six months now. Her favorite thing about gymnastics is that she gets to come to her mom’s job! She loves the fact that her mom gets to watch her do gymnastics classes. Isabella has so much personality that it’s a blast watching her interact with the coaches at the gym. Her mom has noticed a difference in Isabella since she has been enrolled into gymnastics. She feels as though Isabella is learning a lot about controlling and balancing her body. Mom also states that she notices that she tends to focus more. Outside of gymnastics Bella has done dance for several years, and she even loves basketball and long walks with family. Bella is super excited that she gets to take gymnastics and we, here in Arlington, are super excited that she is here with us!

Cypress

Aiden is a wonderful kiddo at ASI Cypress. He is currently in Boys Gymnastics with Coach Gerrad. We asked him why he loves coming to gymnastics and he said, “It’s FUN! I love doing anything related to tumbling, and I am great on the rings. My coach is super fun too!” When Aiden is not doing gymnastics, he enjoys playing football and soccer. ASI Cypress is so happy to have Aiden and his family at the gym!

Firewheel

Gracie is ten years old and is currently in our Girls Team Level 2 with Coach Melyssa and Brittnee, and is also Power Tumbling Gold with Coach Leith. Gracie and her brother have been attending ASI for four years now.

“Initially it was because it was close, but she loves gymnastics now. Also, the coaches care for the kids and want them to do well.”

Gracie loves coming to gymnastics!”It is fun and challenging. I like to compete. I have friends there and I like the coaches,” she says. When she isn’t competing or in class, Gracie also takes dance classes “because it helps me with gymnastics.”

Gracie’s favorite events are bars, beam, and floor. Mom and dad have noticed that Gracie has “gained a lot of confidence and strength. She has also made a lot of friends.” ASI Firewheel is glad to have Gracie and her family with us. Thank you Price family for allowing us to be part of Gracie’s life. We are excited to see the places she will go!

Keller

Lorelei is our Spotlight Student in Keller. Lorelei’s parents found out about ASI Gymnastics simply by driving by our gym four years ago, and we are so lucky they did. From then to now, Lorelei’s hard work and dedication to the sport of gymnastics has earned her a spot on our Level 3 Girl’s Team, where she is trained by Coach Marissa. Lorelei loves coming to gymnastics because “it makes me happy to be here and I love to compete.”  We love seeing Lorelei’s bright smile in the gym during the week. She is always walking in the door in a great mood and ready to work!

In addition to gymnastics, Lorelei enjoys playing volleyball. Her parents love gymnastics because of the things Lorelei has taken from the sport. “She has learned that hard work and dedication pay off, and she has built confidence through her achievements. The commitment to gymnastics has been very beneficial to her character.”

Lorelei’s favorite event is floor, and her tumbling skills show it! Her parents love ASI because it “provides a safe, fun, and nurturing environment that allows our daughter to learn the value of teamwork and embrace her competitive spirit.” We hope to keep this wonderful family for many years to come, and can’t wait to see how far Lorelei takes her gymnastics!

Mesquite

Eight-year-old Catherine is one of our Girls Silver kids at ASI Mesquite. She has been enrolled with us for almost nine months now, and currently comes twice a week to get in extra practice! In Catherine’s time with us she has promoted out of Bronze and into Silver. She is currently working on getting her skills to move up to Gold. Catherine loves coming to gymnastics because “it is fun, and my coaches are very nice and helpful!” When it comes to Catherine’s favorite gymnastics event, it most definitely would be the beams. Catherine’s coaches are so proud of her growth and dedication in gymnastics.

“During class every week, Catherine always gives every skill she is working on 100% even when it may be difficult. Her positive, upbeat personality, and that sweet smile make practice so much better.”

For her parents, Catherine is benefiting from gymnastics because, “she is getting good exercise in body and mind, and is gaining good self esteem.” They chose ASI for Catherine “because ASI is local and has been around for a long time. They have a good reputation for working with the kids” ASI Mesquite is so happy to have Catherine’s family with us, and even happier that Catherine loves coming to gymnastics!

Plano West

Maggie is one of three sisters that attend classes with us. Maggie is eight years old in a Girls Gymnastics Gold class with Coach Stephanie. She has mastered Bronze and Silver with us! Her favorite event is the uneven bars and her favorite skill is the right leg split. We asked her why she loves gymnastics and she said, “It’s fun and gets my energy out!” Softball and volleyball are two other sports that Maggie uses her energy on. Coach Stephanie loves having Maggie in her class. She told us, “Maggie is a hard worker, always follows directions, and gives the class 110% in everything she does!”

Maggie’s parents feel she is benefiting from the class because “Maggie is on the sensory spectrum as a sensory seeker. Gymnastics gives her the exercise and sensory input she needs.” They chose ASI Plano West for their family because “the coaches are always friendly and helpful. She learns all the necessary skills in a happy and fun environment. Other gyms are a bit too ‘serious’ for us.”

Maggie and her family are a great example of the types of families we love at ASI Plano West.

Rockwall

Halyn is one of Coach Lauren’s Tiny Tot Level 2 kids. Halyn started attending ASI Rockwall when she was 16 months old, and she is now almost two and a half. Halyn LOVES coming to gymnastics, and her favorite event to learn is her front roll. Mom speaks for Halyn when she says “playing in a big gym is the best. Jumping and hanging from the bar is fun too.” The Hanna family LOVES coach Lauren, and say she is the BEST! Halyn’s sister, Harper, also had coach Lauren when she was in Kidz Gym Level 1. “She makes sure we are learning and paying attention and always has new fun routines.”

We asked mom how she thought her child was benefiting from gymnastics. She said, “This is the first structured activity I chose for my girls. They learn to listen and follow directions from an alternative adult. They also love the activities. ASI does a great job at keeping it fun while teaching specific skills.”

Outside of gymnastics, Halyn has fun swimming and playing soccer. Her family heard about ASI through another family that attends here in the gym, and we are so glad that they did.

“In the three years that we have been at ASI, the staff stays consistent. Having coaches we can grow with is very important to me. Knowing I can trust the people who are around my children to be happy and reliable is another plus.”

ASI Rockwall is extremely fortunate to have such an eager to learn, loyal, and sweet family in our gym and we look forward to watching Halyn progress.

The Woodlands

Raelynn is a fun, spunky, sassy 14-month-old in our Tiny Tot Level 1 class. We asked Raelynn’s mom why they picked ASI and she said, “I love that she gets to interact with other kids her age and learn great skills coordination and strength building.” When Raelynn is not at gymnastics she loves to play with her puppies, her kitchen, and mommy’s make-up!

10 Ways to Exercise as a Family

It is so important that kids of all ages get exercise in daily; at least an hour a day! Not only is it important for the kids, but for the family too! Coming to gymnastics class for an hour is a perfect way to get some exercise…but what about the other days of the week?

Here are some ways to get in some exercise as a family!

  1. Going on Walks: Try going on a walk with the family either before or after dinner! Make it a routine that you all take a walk together and talk about the day. You can make this a fun activity for kids too! Play a game of I-Spy while you are walking. Have a short race and run to the end of the street. Try to see who can walk on their toes the longest. Making a walk with the family a habit, will increase your chances of forgetting to do it or putting it off.
  2. Make Chores Fun: The house must be cleaned at some point, so make it a fun game! Have sweeping races and see who can collect the most. Play make believe and pretend the floor is lava and all toys must be put in the toy chest to keep safe! Fold the laundry together and make it into a fun activity of Guess Whose It Is!
  3. Make Healthier, Active Day to Day Choices: Try changing up your “lazy” habits into “active” habits. Instead of taking the escalator or elevator, take the stairs. Instead of having the kids ride in the grocery cart at the store, have them walk with you instead. Try to make sure you are standing at least 10 minutes every hour. Add more movement to your day!
  4. TV Breaks: Try to make commercial breaks your fitness breaks! Instead of sitting on the couch during a commercial break, have everyone in the house get up and do jumping jacks or sit-ups! During the break, everyone in the house has to make a lap around the house. This way, you are moving around and getting active while still watching TV.
  5. Walk or Run for Charity: Many organizations hold different kinds of fundraisers, and many hold walks or runs! Volunteer your family to get active, and give back! You could choose a charity run or walk, attend with the family, learn more about this organization, and get fit at the same time. This is healthy for you, and a great way to give back to the community!
  6. Dog Walks: If your family has a dog, take turns either walking the dogs or playing fetch outside. This way, everyone has a turn to be active and get on their feet, including your pet!
  7. Dance Party: While you are cleaning the house, or just spending some time with the family, put on some music and dance! Get everyone on their feet and starting busting out those dance moves. This will help burn some calories rather than sitting on the couch or being bored around the house.
  8. Take the Fitness Outside: Depending on the time of year, bring the activity outside! If there are leaves on the ground, have a race to see who can pick up the most leaves, or who can rake them the fastest. Have running races in the backyard. Make yard work fun! Turn in into something fun that the family does together.
  9. Weekly Sports Night: Pick one night a week, or every other week, and as a family choose a sport. This could be a sport you all love, or a brand new sport. Explore this sport and try to learn how to play it together! Whether that means going to the park to play it, or running to the store together to get supplies, try out this new sport together and work on adding in fitness with fun!
  10. Technology Dungeon: Create a “technology dungeon” for cell phones and other electronic devices. Create a time frame where all devices must be put in the “dungeon” and during that time, other activities must be explored! This will take everyone’s minds off of what is going on, and you can focus on family time together, and exploring one of the above activities!

Make sure to try out all of these fun activities to get more active with the family!
