June Student Spotlight

Muireann

Q: What gymnastics classes are you in?
A: Girls Team and Power Tumbling

Q: Why do you love coming to gymnastics?
A: I enjoy gymnastics because it is challenging. When I master a new skill

I always feel a sense of accomplishment.

Q: What other sports do you enjoy?
A: Fencing and Ice Hockey.

Q: Who is your Coach?
A: Coach Julio, Coach Taryn, and Coach Jennifer.

Q: Tell us why your coach is awesome!
A: My coaches are awesome because they work hard to help me achieve my goals.

Q: How long have you been a student at ASI?
A: Two years.

Q: What is your favorite event?
A: Beam!

Q: From the parent- Why ASI?
A: ASI, has been a very good experience for us. They have always been very communicative and

forthcoming about how our child was progressing and what they felt would be in her

best interest for her to be a successful gymnast.

Q: From the parent- How is your child benefiting from gymnastics?

A:I feel my child benefits from gymnastics in many different ways. She has learned to listen

closely to her coaches, and to take constructive criticism and use it to her benefit.

I feel she has learned to communicate better with other adults and peers

through her experiences at ASI. She has also learned the importance of

practicing patience, respect, and humility in her life and how it isn’t a weakness but a strength when dealing with others.

Coach Marissa

Q: How long have you coached at ASI?

A: I have coached at ASI for five years.

Q: What do you do to stay fit?

A:  I work out at 24 hour fitness occasionally and I practice gymnastics and yoga at home.

Q: What makes gymnastics so great for kids?

Overcoming a skill or connection you’ve worked countless hours on and

being able to perform and show it off is just the best feeling of self pride and accomplishment.

Q: What do you love most about coaching at ASI? Why?

Q: What is your personal athletic background?

A: I was a competitive gymnast from 12 to 18 years old. I competed up to level 8 on bars and level 7 on beam.

I was very lucky to compete through my school system so I got a little late of a start but it was the best!

Coach Damian Shelton Memorial

In Memory of Coach Damian Shelton

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Coach Damian Shelton of ASI Plano West. He was involved in a car accident the morning of Saturday, May 12, 2018. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 20; more details below.

While in high school, Damian found his love of working with kids. Upon graduation, his passion grew stronger as he began working with the kids at ASI Gymnastics. There was never a day that he didn’t talk about “his” kids and their accomplishments. Each kid held a special place in his heart, especially his Gymmie Kids.

Two of the hundreds of students Damian influenced, Samson and Dante were recently featured as Student of the Month at ASI Gymnastics.

ASI Gymnastics offers their condolences to Damian’s family, friends, and everyone affected in this tragedy. The ASI Plano West staff appreciates the prayers and tributes for Coach Damian. Please pray for everyone involved, our staff, and the ASI families as they share bad news with their children. Damian will be greatly missed; he was a light in the gym to his coworkers and students.

ASI has created a Damian Shelton Scholarship in his honor. This scholarship will give a child with special needs the opportunity to experience the joys of gymnastics in our Gymmie Kids program.
